ICE vs. HEAT
ICE:
When do I use ice?
- First 72 hours of the injury
- When swelling is present
- After exercise
How long/often should I ice for?
- 15-20 minutes at a time
3-4 times a day depending on amount of swelling and pain present
What's the best way to ice?
- Make sure the whole body part is covered (top and bottom of knee, front and back of shoulder, surround ankle joint, etc)
- Family bag of frozen peas/corn- keep refreezing after each use
- Crushed ice- put in a zip lock bag.
- Ice packs- (different sizes/shapes available for purchase at Atlas for $15-$20)
HEAT:
When do I use heat?
- Only after 72 hours of the injury or increased swelling may occur
- Tight/spasm muscles to promote relaxation
- To increase circulation
How long/often should I heat for?
- 15-20 minutes at a time
3-4 times a day depending on amount of swelling and pain present
What's the best way to heat?
- Warm (104-106°) whirlpool
- Moist hot pack
- Rice pack- fill an old pillow case 1/3-1/2 way up with uncooked rice. Knot off the end of the pillow case. Place in microwave for 5 minutes. Reuse whenever as needed as the uncooked rice lasts forever! The rice pack will mold nicely to your body part.
